The workforce behind net-zero
New forecasts from WLC highlight which UK regions may face rising pressure on retrofit trades to meet net-zero targets.
Powered by WLC’s Low-Carbon Labour Forecasting Tool, the forecasts translate property-level EPC data and retrofit requirements into clear, occupation-specific projections of the skilled labour needed.
In South London, retrofitting properties across six boroughs require around 66,200 person-years of additional skilled labour by 2032 — nearly 40% above current demand.
In the Tees Valley, demand pressures are expected to rise for building-envelope specialists, trade supervisors, and plumbing/HVAC occupations, with demand projected to peak by 2033.
For local authorities, skills bodies and developers, these insights provide an evidence base for planning, investment, and aligning training capacity with real regional need.
