Benchmarking

Benchmarking is seen by government and the industry as a powerful driver of improvement. WLC Ltd is heavily engaged in numerous initiatives to promote the development and implementation of simple yet useful performance indicators.
 
In collaboration with the University of Dundee, we have recently been commissioned to evaluate potential performance indicators in the areas of

• Safety
• Productivity including labour productivity
• Quality including rework, defects and reliability
• Cost including cost/m2, cost per unit, cost effectiveness
• Time including duration (normalised to take account of differences in design) percentage of milestones achieved (including planned completion dates) achieved
• Predictability of time and cost
• Efficiency
• Material waste
• Carbon emissions

Also In collaboration with the University of Dundee, we have been awarded a further contract funded by UKRI to develop consistent benchmarks to drive improved performance in construction projects.

Our Chairman, Professor Malcolm Horner is a member of the Department for Transport’s Academia Analytical Consortium and their productivity and Client Costs Working Group and has been heavily involved in the development of the International Cost Measurement Standards (ICMS) promoted by the RICS. As a result, we have created a free-to-use cost benchmarking tool for ICMS which may be downloaded here.
